Mallorca is a beautiful and versatile island in the Mediterranean Sea. It is the largest island of the Balearic Islands and you will find something for everyone: beautiful beaches, attractive mountain villages, impressive nature, a pleasant capital and delicious food. Take a look at my tips for things to do in Mallorca!
#1 Visit the beautiful mountain village of Valldemossa
Valldemossa is, in my opinion, the most beautiful and atmospheric village in Mallorca. This village is located in the middle of the green hills of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, about half an hour’s drive north of the capital Palma. It really still feels like the authentic Mallorca here: narrow and attractive streets full of houses made of natural stone, colorful plants everywhere, beautiful details and squares full of cozy restaurants. It is not for nothing that Valldemossa is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
#2 Take a road trip across Cap de Formentor
The Cap de Formentor area is located in the north of Mallorca, at the tip of the Formentor peninsula. This peninsula is part of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, which covers the entire northwest coast of Mallorca. The landscape of this cape is breathtakingly beautiful and the high rocks in the sea are very impressive. Keep in mind that the road to Cap de Formentor is closed for a large part of the day during high season. Fortunately, you can use the shuttle buses, visit the cape with a tour or cycle the road.
#3 Visit the atmospheric capital Palma de Mallorca
Of course you should not miss a visit to the capital Palma de Mallorca when you are in Mallorca. The main attraction of Palma is the beautiful cathedral La Seu. This immense cathedral is no less than 121 meters long and 55 meters wide. The inside of the cathedral is also very impressive. Another place not to be missed is the Mercat de Santa Catalina, a great market hall full of Mallorcan delicacies.
#4 Enjoy the views in Parc Natural de Mondrago
Parc Natural de Mondragó is a beautiful natural park on the south-east coast of Mallorca. Here you will find three of the most beautiful beaches in Mallorca, which are completely surrounded by pine trees. In addition, a number of short walking routes have been mapped out through the park, where you have a beautiful view of the coast and the azure water at various places. The Mondragó Natural Park is therefore suitable for both hiking and beach lovers.
#5 Visit the impressive Caves of Drach
The Caves of Drach, or Cuevas del Drach, is a collection of four caves in eastern Mallorca. These four caves are all connected and the cave system is over 4 kilometers long in total. The main attraction in the Drach Caves is the Martel Lake, the largest underground lake in Europe. This lake is no less than 115 by 30 meters in size. The caves of Drach can only be visited with a guided tour. This tour takes about an hour and the route is about 1200 meters long. Along the way you get a good picture of the impressive cave system. At the end of the tour you can also enjoy a classical concert, where the musicians sail on a gondola over the underground lake.
#6 Discover the atmospheric port of Cala Figuera
The fishing village of Cala Figuera is beautifully situated between the rock walls full of pine and fig trees. The white houses with their characteristic green shutters provide a beautiful picture. Many fishermen’s cottages also have a terrace that opens onto the water’s edge where they can moor their boats. This atmospheric harbor is definitely worth a visit. Not least because you can also eat delicious freshly caught fish.
#7 Taste the local Ensaimadas
You will find the popular ensaimadas in almost all bakeries in Mallorca. These sweet and airy sandwiches in the shape of a snail shell are a typical Majorcan delicacy. The first ensaimadas were made as early as the 17th century. They are often eaten for breakfast in Mallorca, but they are also delicious as a snack. The best ensaimadas in Mallorca can be found in the authentic bakeries of Horno Santo Christo. This bakery has several branches, including one at the Mallorca airport, so you can take some ensaimadas home with you too.
#8 Relax in the beautiful coves at Cala D’Or
In the east of Mallorca you will find the most atmospheric bays on the island, especially around the town of Cala D’Or. For example, visit the beautiful Cala Esmeralda or Cala Ferrera. Cala Santanyí is also beautiful, but often a bit busier. If you are mainly looking for a beach holiday, it is recommended to stay in Cala D’Or. Here you will find a number of nice and very affordable hotels with a swimming pool within walking distance of various beaches.
#9 Hike around the inland mountain lakes
One of the biggest surprises in terms of nature on Mallorca was the two beautiful reservoirs inland. The first lake, Embassament de Cúber, is an hour’s drive from the capital Palma de Mallorca and 7 minutes away you will find the lake Gorg Blau. Both lakes are beautiful: clear blue water surrounded by huge mountains, countless trees and lots of greenery. You will find several beautiful hiking trails both around the lake and in the surrounding mountains.
#10 Taste the best orange juice in Sóller
The town of Sóller is located in the interior of Mallorca, a short half hour drive from the capital Palma de Mallorca. This cozy and authentic town is completely surrounded by orange groves. So settle down on one of the cozy terraces on the square near the church and enjoy the best orange juice in Mallorca. You can also combine a visit to Sóller with the associated port of Port de Sóller. Port de Sóller can be reached from Sóller with a historic wooden train and you can enjoy a lovely walk along the boulevard.
#11 Admire the view at Es Pontas
Es Pontas is a huge rock in the sea in the shape of a bridge. This natural bridge is over 20 meters high and very impressive to see. The photo doesn’t really give you a good idea of how gigantic the rock actually is. You will find the bridge between Cala Santanyí and Cala Llombards. You can reach the viewpoint via a short hiking trail. From this viewpoint you not only have a beautiful view of Es Pontas itself, but also of the beautiful surroundings full of high cliffs and clear azure water. There is also a nice picnic area and if you go early you will have this beautiful spot all to yourself.
#12 Walk or cycle through the beautiful Parc Natural de s’Albufera de Mallorca
Parc Natural de s’Albufera de Mallorca is the largest marsh in the Balearic Islands. You will find this lagoon between Alcúdia and Can Picafort. It is an oasis of peace and nature here is very special and completely different from the rest of the island. In this park you will mainly find ponds and marshes, surrounded by lush vegetation. The area is also a popular breeding ground for birds. No less than 200 different bird species live in this natural park of Albufera. To spot these birds, it is best to visit the park early in the morning. You can explore Parc Natural de s’Albufera de Mallorca on foot or by bike.
#13 Discover the green mountains at Deia
Between the atmospheric towns of Valldemossa and Sóller you will find various hiking trails through the green mountains. Along the way you walk along vast olive groves and vineyards. You can also take a fantastic route through the mountains by car. On the way you drive straight through the atmospheric mountain village of Deià. Be sure to stop at the special white temple of Son Marroig for a great view of the coast. Really a beautiful green part of Mallorca!
#14 Relax on the long stretches of beach at Es Trenc or Playa de Muro
Earlier I mentioned the atmospheric bays in the east of Mallorca, but in addition to these bays, there are also a number of elongated beaches on Mallorca. One of the most popular beaches is Es Trenc on the south coast of the island. The sandy beach is over 2 kilometers long and is often compared to the beaches of the Caribbean because of the pearly white sand and clear water. Also in the northeast you will find a beach that is very similar to the beaches in the Caribbean: the beautiful Playa de Muro. This beach is over 6 kilometers long and runs into the beach of Alcúdia in the north. It is wonderfully sheltered between the dunes. There is also a large pier. Due to the shallow water, both beaches are also very suitable for children.
#15 sunrise or sunset hot air balloon ride
Do you want to do something very special during your holiday on Mallorca or surprise your fellow traveller(s)? Consider a hot air balloon ride. Special balloon flights can be booked around sunrise or sunset, so you can discover Mallorca at its very best. These hot air balloon rides include a cava toast and photos and videos from the flight.
#16 Go parasailing in Mallorca
#17 Swim in a unique sea cave
The Cova des Coloms is one of the few sea caves in Mallorca in which you can actually swim. The cave resembles the famous cenotes in Mexico. You will find the hidden cave Cova des Coloms on the coast of Cala Romantica. From here you have to swim another 300 meters and then a little bit under water until you find yourself in this magical cave. After swimming in the cave, an experienced guide will show you around the maze of underground passages and lakes. Truly a unique experience!
#18 Canyoning in the Muntanya Canyon
The Muntanya Canyon is located in the north of Mallorca. The Torrente de Muntanya, a river that flows near Pollença, has created this unique gorge over the centuries, which is perfect for canyoning. This Muntanya Canyon is a perfect canyon for beginners who have little or no experience with canyoning. This canyoning activity is also very suitable for children. You can walk, swim and abseil very well here. The gorge is beautifully surrounded by limestone and the erosion of the stones has created a kind of stairs to descend.
#19 Coastering along the coast of Mallorca
You can make a very cool coasteering excursion from Alcudia and Palma, among others. This is a free new adventure activity where you combine swimming and climbing among others. Coasteering is similar to canyoning, but always takes place along the coast. During this excursion, a certified guide will take you along one of the most beautiful coastlines of Mallorca. Here you abseil from huge cliffs, swim through caves, scramble along the rocky coastline and go cliff jumping from 3-12 meters high. You do not need any experience, but you must be adventurous.
#20 Boat trip along the coast
From almost the entire island it is possible to make a beautiful boat trip along the coast. It is wonderful to spend a day on the water and discover the beautiful coastline and atmospheric bays of Mallorca. Many boat trips combine a few hours of sailing with a meal on board or on a beach. There is also often enough time for swimming, snorkeling or even kayaking. A unique glass bottom boat also operates from the east coast of Mallorca.
