Camping in Limburg: discover Huttopia de Meinweg

Huttopia’s camping concept really appeals to me. Luxurious, small-scale campsites in special places in nature, with spacious pitches and great accommodations to rent.

That’s not classic camping, but I don’t necessarily go to a campsite to sleep on an air mattress. I mainly go to be outside all day, walk barefoot, have a barbecue, read books and look at the stars. Whether you sleep in a tent or on a good bed in a luxurious glamping tent, that experience does not change at all. In fact, relaxing is even easier in a luxurious environment. And so I am a big fan of Huttopia.

Huttopia is a French company, but set foot on Dutch soil a few years ago with the opening of camping site de Roos in Overijssel, directly on the Vecht. A beautiful campsite with lots of greenery and nice accommodations. Huttopia has now opened even more campsites: on the Veluwe and in Limburg. And we would like to experience the latter ourselves. On to Huttopia de Meinweg in Herkenbosch!

Meinweg National Park

It probably won’t ring a bell when you hear about De Meinweg National Park. The Netherlands has 21 national parks and I think we can say that this is one of the lesser known. The Meinweg is located in Central Limburg, between Roermond and the German border.

The area varies in woods and heathland, with boardwalks and a lookout tower. You can take short blocks or take long walks.

And the nice thing is, camping de Meinweg is just around the corner! You can get there on foot or by bike.

That’s how nice Huttopia de Meinweg is

Huttopia de Meinweg is located in a fairly quiet part of Limburg. The city of Roermond is only a fifteen minute drive away. When you drive up you immediately see how large and nice and quiet this campsite is.

Huttopia campsites have a lot in common. The pitches are especially spacious, sometimes you can’t even see the neighbors. And the accommodations are the same everywhere: a trappeur tent in the South of France is exactly the same tent in Limburg. There is always a playground for the kids and (almost always) a (heated) swimming pool.

This is also the case at Huttopia de Meinweg. This campsite is located in a quiet place with lots of greenery. On a weekend when the thermometer reaches 32 degrees, it is great that there is a large swimming pool. And very handy with small children: there is a specially fenced off area where the little ones can play safely. There are wooden platforms around the pool, so bring water shoes.

Tip: If you are only staying here for a few days, it is good to know that you can join us for breakfast every day. There is also a small shop, a bread service (order in advance) and in the evening you can eat fresh pizzas.

Very nice is the large recreation room with bar and sitting area. You can borrow games for indoors and outdoors and here you will also find the shop. Just like on all other Huttopias, this is the place where you have good reception with your phone, but that is a lot less on the rest of the campsite. And that’s a good thing, you have a lot of time to relax.

huttopia-meinweg-trappeurThis accommodation is my favourite type: the luxury trappeur tent.

We spend the night at Huttopia de Meinweg in a trapper. This is a luxury glamping tent with two sleeping cabins, a kitchen and a private bathroom with toilet, shower and sink in the tent. And a very good bed. Super luxurious.

The trappeurs are on very spacious places, with their backs to each other, so that everyone has sufficient privacy. If you don’t want a tent, there are also wooden chalets or gypsy wagons for rent. Extras such as a baby cot, linen package or final cleaning can all be booked separately so that the holiday becomes a real holiday.

Tip: If you don’t feel like cooking, you can also rent a barbecue for eight euros. Located virtually next to the campground Brasserie de Boshut where you can also eat well.

For a long weekend in your own country, or perhaps even longer, this is a very nice campsite. Because of the heat, we have done little to discover the area, but that is certainly possible. Roermond is nearby, as is the Meinweg National Park.
