Béziers is one of the oldest cities in France. But it’s so small that you probably don’t know this place. Béziers is located between Montpellier and Narbonne, in the South of France. Well-known seaside resorts such as Vias Plage, Valras Plage and Cap d’Agde are just around the corner. And that makes Béziers a nice place for an (afternoon) day out if you are on holiday in the South of France in the summer months.

It is a beautiful town with lots to see, but where you should especially enjoy walking around. No list of highlights in your pocket, just take the narrow streets and be surprised by beautiful squares and viewpoints. Béziers in the summer is great!

Things to do in Béziers

Do you still want to know where to go, what the nice places are? Then I have a few tips for you.

  • Cathedral Saint Nazaire is one of the most beautiful buildings in the town. It is a large and impressive building with many details. Most of it dates from the 13th century. It stands on top of a hill like a kind of castle. Be sure to walk around it.
  • At the back of the cathedral you will find a small square: Place de la Revolution with a fountain and a cozy terrace. It is recommended to take time here for a cold glass of Perrier.
  • On the Place du Forum you will find plenty of terraces where you can have lunch at noon. French style, with a glass of wine of course.
  • From Place du Forum, cross the narrow streets Rue Viennet and Rue Boudard. Walk quietly, look up, because you have rarely seen so much French charm.
  • On the Place des Bon Amis there is also a great restaurant with perhaps the nicest terrace in Béziers: Le Cerf Volant. Here you sit between the tall green plants, where the lanterns are lit in the evening.

The most beautiful view in Béziers

Béziers is built on a hill and at the highest point you have a very nice view. The streets go up and down quite a bit, it is not really flat anywhere.

If you started at the highest point, at Cathedral Saint-Nazaire, slowly wander down. There you will discover streets that seem to be completely deserted, where the houses are painted in dreamy pastel shades, with some Tuscan vibes here and there. Rue des Anciennes Arenes is beautiful, as are all the surrounding streets.

From there, walk to Église Saint-Jacques. In the beautiful garden around this church you have the best view of Béziers. In the distance you can see the Cathedral of Saint-Nazaire. And so you can also see Pont Vieux, of course the oldest bridge in Béziers. By the way, you can also take very nice pictures on the other side of the bridge, in the Amphitheater du Pont Vieux, because there you can see the entire old city at a glance. You cannot cross the bridge itself on foot, but you can cross the bridge next to it: Pont Neuf.
