Going out for dinner in Ghent is a true party. Good food in Ghent is absolutely not difficult to find and you will undoubtedly lack time to try out all the good restaurants in Ghent. Do you want good food in Ghent or are you looking for tips for nice places to have lunch or a drink? In this article I share my favorite places for good food and drinks in Ghent!

Food tour with guide

First of all, a tip for people who would like to taste as many goodies as possible in a short time. Do a two hour food tour with a local. This is a very nice way to discover Ghent and its culinary specialties. During this tour you combine a city walk with good food and drinks. Ideal!

Beiruti restaurant

One of the nicest restaurants in Ghent where I have eaten is without a doubt the Lebanese Beiruti. Upon entering, you immediately run into the open kitchen where all kinds of delicious dishes from the Middle East are prepared. Honey-sweet baklava, creamy hummus, crunchy pitas, if you love Lebanese food, don’t miss Beiruti. You can take a seat downstairs or upstairs in this restaurant. You can order, like in most places in Ghent, via a QR code. You also pay directly when placing your order. Tip: do you love goat cheese? Then definitely order the goat cheese balls with herbs, so heavenly delicious.

Faim Fatale restaurant

Do you want to eat fancy in Ghent without it costing you a rib? Then Faim Fatale is the restaurant for you. For €42 you can enjoy a 3-course dinner at star level. For 4 courses you pay €52. In the photo you can see parsnip, swede and cod. Then we enjoyed fish soup with chanterelles, spinach and raw mushrooms. The main course consisted of fish, sweet potato, mussels, red cabbage and mash. For dessert I ate dark chocolate mousse and ice cream with quince. Everything was very tasty and of high quality and I definitely recommend Faim Fatale if you want to eat extensive and delicious food in Ghent.

Petit Thai

A restaurant of a completely different order is Petit Thai. This small shop on the Nederkouter really brings you (back) to Thailand. The authentic Thai smells greet you as soon as you step in and my stomach immediately started to rumble. In the open kitchen, just like in Thailand, cooking is done on a high fire. I ordered a Massaman curry with tofu and sweet potato and it really tasted like in Thailand. Be sure to order a glass of homemade lemonade, super tasty and refreshing.

Bicho Malo

Are you looking for a good Mexican restaurant in Ghent? Book a table at Bicho Malo. Here you can enjoy homemade tacos with fresh mole and guacamole, churros, margaritas, empañadas and many more typical Mexican delicacies. Most dishes are really meant to be shared, so let the table be completely full and taste everything. Bicho Malo is located near the Vrijdagmarkt, so if you come by car, you can easily park in the underground garage. In any case, this Mexican restaurant in Ghent should not be missed by enthusiasts.

Julie’s House

Julie’s House is a cute bakery with a display case full of homemade cakes. The ideal place for a stop during your walk through Ghent as far as I’m concerned. I warn you in advance: choice stress is guaranteed. Especially if, like me, you love cake. We therefore decided to order 3 pieces, so that we could taste more flavors. That was a very good idea and secretly we could have eaten a lot more, so delicious! My favourite? The pecan pie was very tasty. Although the lemon tart was also divine. You heard it already, go to Julie’s House and judge for yourself!

Meme Gusta

One of the nicest restaurants where you can eat typical Flemish food in Ghent is Mémé Gusta. Mémé Gusta is a very hip but also very atmospheric restaurant whose menu is full of Flemish classics. Think of tomatoes filled with shrimps, mackerel rillette, steak Bernaise and homemade cheese and shrimp croquettes. In addition, the traditional stew should not be missed. This can be ordered with both meat and seitan (meat substitute). You get a bowl of stewed potatoes, fries and a salad. Enjoy!

Het Moment

Directly opposite Mémé Gusta is Het Moment, an attractive little place where you can take a seat for a cup of coffee and cake, but also for a nice beer with a savory snack. They themselves describe it as ‘coffee, aperitif and literature’. When we had a drink here before dinner, quite a few people were working or reading and drinking on their own. So that description seems to be very accurate. In the summer you can also take a seat on the terrace.

Gruut city brewery

Beer lovers gather! Ghent has its own city brewery and as far as I’m concerned, your city trip isn’t complete without tasting a real Ghent Gruut. The brewery is within walking distance of the center and you can go here for a beer tasting or a tour. Guided tours are given every day at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. and you can join them for €11. This includes a tasting of three beers. Of course you can also just walk in to drink a glass of beer in the café or on the terrace.

Edgar Kaasbar

Opposite the city brewery is Edgar Kaasbar, a restaurant in Ghent that I would have loved to visit. Unfortunately, the cheese bar did not open until 6 pm while we were at the door at 2 pm. So I can’t speak from my own experience, but given the reviews and photos of others I dare to say that this is one of the nicest places to eat in Ghent if you love cheese. The menu features various cheese dishes, different types of raclette and cheeses from the oven. Next time I’m in Ghent, I’m definitely going to eat here.

De Dulle Griet

De Dulle Griet is a household name in Ghent and far beyond. More than 500 beers are on the menu in this beer café on the Vrijdagmarkt. A large part of this is Belgian beer. If you want to drink the MAX house beer, you are obliged to take off one shoe and put it in a basket. This basket is then lifted to the ceiling. The reason for this is that in the past people often took the special MAX glasses home. Now you only get your shoe back after you have handed in the glass.

Trattoria della Mama

Looking for a real, traditional Italian restaurant in Ghent? Then go to Trattoria della Mamma. In this trattoria you can buy Italian cheese, charcuterie, pestos and pastas to take home. You can also have lunch with homemade Italian delicacies. There are only six dishes on the menu which changes weekly. In addition, you can always order a cheese and/or charcuterie board as a starter and of course an Italian lunch is not complete without a tasty dessert. Trattoria della Mamma is a wonderful Italian restaurant in Ghent where you can have a real Italian lunch.

Le Botaniste

Ghent has a remarkable number of vegetarian restaurants. One of the nicest is Le Botaniste, a restaurant located in an old pharmacy. Here you can enjoy pure, completely plant-based dishes. At the salad bar you can also put together your own meal if you want. The dishes are authentic, based on vegetables, without substitutes. Especially if you eat completely vegan you should not skip Le Botaniste. You can sit inside, but you can also bring a meal to eat somewhere by the water on a sunny day.

Yalo Hotel Bar & Restaurant

During my city trip to Ghent I stayed at the Yalo Hotel. This is without doubt one of the most beautiful hotels in Ghent and that is mainly due to the beautiful Yalo Restaurant. The roof consists entirely of glass, which gives the already immense space an even grander feel. Atmospheric seats have been placed everywhere and a DJ is playing live music. On the menu you will find luxurious snacks such as oysters, scallops, steak tartare and bimi. In addition, Yalo has a well-stocked cocktail menu. I advise you to drink at least a good cocktail in this beautiful hotel before your dinner.

Additional tip: Patershol

Patershol is the catering district of Ghent. Here are many cozy restaurants, bars and eateries together and if you don’t know what you’re hungry for, I advise you to walk through here. You are guaranteed to find something you like. There is a Lebanese restaurant, a Turkish restaurant, several sushi shops and a typical Flemish restaurant. Personally, I find lunch shop Simon Says very casual and cozy.
