Day 1: Arrival in Malaga

Your tour of Andalusia probably starts in Málaga. From the airport in Málaga you can easily take the train to the center. You don’t need a rental car in Malaga itself. Depending on what time you arrive, you can already see a number of beautiful sights in Málaga and of course enjoy the delicious Spanish tapas.

Tips for staying overnight in Málaga (2 nights):

  • The 4-star hotel Molina Lario in the center of Málaga with a lovely swimming pool and sun terrace.
  • The spacious and modern Premium Beach Design Apartments right on the beach of Málaga and with private parking.

This way you will see the most important known and unknown sights of the city in 3 hours and you will get a good impression of what Málaga has to offer. Spend the afternoon on the lovely beach of Málaga or take a nice walk through the attractive center of the city.

Day 3: Málaga, Mijas, Marbella & Ronda

Pick up your rental car in the morning in the center of Málaga. You can choose to drive directly to Ronda from here in about 1.5 hours, but I actually advise you to make some nice stops along the way. For example, make a short stopover in the picturesque mountain village of Mijas and visit Marbella. The old center of this seaside resort is very atmospheric with its narrow alleys and nice squares. Marbella is also a perfect place for a late lunch. From here you drive inland via a beautiful route to Ronda, where you will stay for 2 nights.

Tips for staying overnight in Ronda (2 nights):

  • Hotel El Tajo & SPA. Beautiful and affordable 4-star hotel in the center of Ronda, including spa, indoor pool and parking.
  • Apartamentos La Bola Suite. Spacious and modern apartment in the heart of Ronda with air conditioning and fully equipped kitchen.
  • Ronda Hotel Polo. Authentic and very centrally located family hotel with a lovely roof terrace with a view over Ronda.

Day 4: Ronda

Today you have a full day to explore Ronda. This town is located in the mountains of Andalusia and is particularly known for its impressive bridge. This bridge connects the two parts of the city, which are separated by a deep gorge. Be sure to walk to the waterfall under this bridge. Besides its famous bridges, Ronda has much more to offer. It is one of the most beautiful and atmospheric towns in Andalusia and there are cozy squares everywhere in the city. There are viewpoints in many places in the city where you have a fantastic view of the green surroundings and the impressive gorge.

Day 5: Ronda, Setenil de Bodegas & Cadiz

From Ronda you can drive to Setenil de las Bodegas in less than half an hour. This unique white village is completely built into the rocks. Setenil de las Bodegas is therefore known for its special rock dwellings. Be sure to walk to the various miradores, where you have a beautiful view of the white buildings, the old castle of Setenil and the former fortress. After your visit to Setenil de las Bodegas, drive to Cadiz. This is one of the most beautiful coastal towns in Andalusia, mainly because of its special location. The city is located on a small peninsula, so you are surrounded by water on three sides.

Overnight in Cadiz (1 night):

  • Jardines de la Candelaria Cadiz. Beautiful apartment in the center of Cádiz, within walking distance of Playa de la Punta San Felipe and La Caleta beach.
  • El Armador Casa Palacio. Fantastic studios and apartments in the old center near the beach.

Day 6: Cadiz & Seville

Spend the day in atmospheric Cadiz. Cadiz is also called little Havana, because of its wide boulevard that has many similarities with the Havana boulevard. This is because in Spanish colonial times there was an important sea connection between Cadiz and Havana. In the atmospheric old town of Cadiz you can wander around between narrow streets and beautiful historic buildings. Be sure to take a look at the cathedral, the beautiful park Genoves and the tower Tavira. Drive towards Seville towards the end of the afternoon, so that you can dine here at one of the nice tapas places.

Overnight tips in Seville (3 nights):

  • Cathedral Boutique. Nice guest house right in front of Seville Cathedral with double rooms from €50 per night.
  • EME Cathedral Hotel. Fantastic 5 star hotel with roof terrace overlooking the cathedral including swimming pool.
  • Hotel Dona Maria. Well-reviewed hotel with swimming pool in a former palace in the heart of Seville.

Day 7: Seville

You have two full days to explore Seville. We previously wrote a handy schedule for Seville in two days, in which you visit all the highlights of the city. Today is planned under the Real Alcázar de Sevilla. You will be amazed in this former Royal Palace. Then walk along the Guadalquivir towards the hip Triana district on the other side of the river. Relax in the lovely city park and finally visit Plaza de España, the most beautiful square in Spain. Another nice tip is to go cycling on your first morning in Seville. This way you can see the most beautiful sights of the city in 3 hours.

Day 8: Seville

On your second day in Seville, visit the city’s cathedral and accompanying Giralda tower. From this 105 meter high tower you have the best view over the city. Then walk to Metropol Parasol, a large and modern work of art. It consists of six large wooden umbrellas with a grid pattern that are attached to each other. An impressive walking path has been built on top of the wooden construction, from where you have a nice view over the city. In the evening, this work of art is also beautifully lit.

Day 9: Seville & Cordoba

Today a trip to another beautiful city in Andalusia is planned. Spend the morning in Seville and then drive to Córdoba in just under two hours. This is the most surprising city in Andalusia. I personally also think it is one of the most beautiful cities in all of Spain and here you can still experience the real Andalusia. There are many beautiful sights and the special thing is that you can see Roman, Moorish and Christian influences here. You can also enjoy delicious food in Córdoba and the city has many of its own authentic dishes.

Overnight tips in Córdoba (2 nights):

  • Eurostars Conquistador. Fantastic location, right opposite the Mezquita in the atmospheric Judería district. You can enjoy a delicious breakfast buffet in the morning in the traditional Andalusian courtyard.
  • La Ermita Suites. Beautiful and centrally located apartments with fully equipped kitchen and private bathroom. Optionally you can book a nice breakfast.
  • Cordoba Home Center Suites. Luxurious and modern suites with fully equipped kitchen and bathroom, a few hundred meters from the old center. Includes free private parking space.

Seville – Córdoba: 141 kilometers (1 hour and 46 minutes)

Day 10: Cordoba

Today you have one full day in Córdoba. Be sure to visit the Mezquita. This unique mosque and cathedral in one is known for its distinctive decorated arches. You should also not miss the Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos, the colorful patios of Córdoba and a walk across the Puente Romano. We previously shared a handy walking route where you can see the highlights of Córdoba in one day.

Day 11: Cordoba, El Torcal de Antequera & Granada

From Córdoba it is still quite a drive to Granada. I therefore advise you to make a stop about halfway in the beautiful natural park El Torcal de Antequera. This national park is free to visit. Three beautiful walking routes have been laid out in the park, varying from 1.5 to 4.5 kilometers in length. Perfect for stretching your legs. The rock formations you encounter along the way are very impressive. After your visit to El Torcal de Antequera, I recommend that you also visit the nearby town of Antequera. In this atmospheric city you will find the most churches per square kilometer in Spain and it is very nice to walk through this town. Then continue to Granada, where you will stay for three nights.

Overnight tips in Granada (3 nights):

  • Porcelain Alixares. Fantastic hotel near the Alhambra and with great views of the city. It is one of the few hotels that also has a swimming pool.
  • Aurea Catedral by Eurostars. One of the best rated hotels in Granada, in the heart of the city center right next to the cathedral.
  • Bendita House. Lovely apartment with air conditioning, kitchen and terrace with mountain and city views.

Córdoba – El Torcal de Antequera: 137 kilometers (1 hour and 43 minutes)
El Torcal de Antequera – Granada: 114 kilometers (1 hour and 34 minutes)

Day 12: Granada

Today the most visited attraction of Andalusia is on the schedule: the Alhambra. I always thought the Alhambra was one big building, but it is a huge complex of no less than 140,000 m². There are several palaces and gardens and a large old military part full of dungeons and watchtowers. I found the Alhambra really impressive and much more beautiful than I had expected. A visit to this special monument is, in my opinion, a must during your tour of Andalusia. Book tickets well in advance, because places are limited and it fills up quickly.

Day 13: Granada

In addition to the world-famous Alhambra, there is much more to experience in Granada. Today you have a full day to see the city itself. It almost feels like you are walking in Morocco instead of in Spain. Moorish influences can still be found everywhere. You can also see the typical Arab tea houses at various places in the city and you can alternate the tapas with delicious dishes from the Moroccan kitchen.

Day 14: Granada, Nerja, Frigiliana & Málaga

Your planning for the last day of this Andalusia tour depends on the time of your return flight. From Granada you can drive back to Málaga airport in about 1.5 hours. If you still have a day left, because you don’t fly back until the next morning, there are still a number of nice stops on the schedule today. Drive first to the coastal town of Nerja, where you can visit the Cueva de Nerja. This huge stalactite cave was only discovered in 1959 and is one of the largest caves in Europe. The coast of Nerja is also very beautiful, especially the view of the cliffs from the Balcon de Europa. Another nice stop is Frigiliana, one of the most beautiful white villages in Andalusia, located on a 400 meter high hill.

Overnight stay in Málaga (1 night): An overnight stay at the Ibis Budget Malaga Airport Hotel is ideal for an early flight.

Granada – Nerja: 95 kilometers (1 hour and 7 minutes)
Nerja – Frigiliana: 7 kilometers (13 minutes)
Frigiliana – Málaga Airport: 70 kilometers (48 minutes)

Tips to shorten your tour of Andalusia

Do you have less time for your tour through Andalusia? Then you can easily shorten your tour of Andalusia. For example, drive from Ronda, via Setenil de las Bodegas, to Seville and skip Cadiz. Do you only have one week? From Málaga you can also make a very good tour of Andalusia in one week. You can also opt for a longer city trip in Málaga or Seville and from there make day trips to beautiful places in the area.

Tour Andalusia by public transport

Don’t feel like driving the entire route yourself? No problem! You can also make a great tour through Andalusia by public transport. Most cities are very well connected by train. You can travel directly by express train from Málaga to Córdoba in an hour and from Córdoba to Seville in just 45 minutes. I advise you to book tickets for the express trains at least a few days in advance, because they work with fixed seats here. This can easily be done via the website of Renfe, the Spanish railway company.
